Agnostic.com

A few days ago I have discovered the dark twin of agnostic.com, called slug.com (no idea what that means. Maybe 'slug' is not only a kind of snail but has a slang meaning I ignore?)

slug.com is for people who believe that FOX-News is really unbiased and Trump should be the legitimate President.
And like agnostic.com, it's an echo chamber, just for the opposite tribe.

Every echo chamber needs some dissenters, and i'm doing my very best, here and over there.
Does anyone feel like helping me with this?

It is quite easy to post an anti-gun meme here and receive all the likes and hearts.
It's more difficult to do the same on enemy turf and stand the heat.
Any volunteers?

No. I come here to agnostic.com to get away from the controversy on FB and IRL. I come here for (usually) intelligent conversation. Yes, I realize this is a bit of an echo chamber, but it's soothing for me, a refuge, and I am sure that I couldn't stomach visiting an echo chamber of a site where I'd disagree with the members in so many ways.

@Matias IRL = In Real Life. 🙂

I have known about our ‘dark twin” site for a couple of years now…but from all accounts I’ve heard about it, I know it’s not the kind of place for me to hang out. I find a few members here on this site challenging enough to deal with because of their extreme political and worldviews, and don’t wish to bandy words with those who are possibly ruder and even more entrenched in alternative realities. However I wish you good luck and perhaps you can regale us, from time to time, with some feedback from your encounters “over there” on the dark side!

I might see my neighbors, too depressing.

For my own possible protection, I LIKE knowing who the right-wingers are in my neighborhood. (Hint: about half of them.)

@mischl I have noted the residences that have MAGA flags and bumperstickers and judging by the election results it's far more than half.

@MizJ Unfortunately, we live in a very RED state. I'm wondering which direction FL is going. Will it ever be blue again?

SLUG's original name was IDW.Community, a community for fans of the Intellectual Dark Web. SLUG as in to punch something, hence the fist logo. While there are screwballs on there who believe Trump won in 2020, there are equally many on this site who believe the 2016 Election was stolen from Clinton, which is also screwy. SLUG may have the racist dirtbags, but there's no shortage of hateful bigoted people on here either, those who love to bully others for holding different point of views. Aren't most social media platforms these days echo chambers for one extreme or the other? I think they are.

@Matias
Slug didn’t come from the IDW, it was just in appreciation of it. No one in the actual IDW probably ever heard of the site that eventually became Slug. I don’t know the exact story behind the name change, but it may have been due to potential legal conflict with the real IDW?

@Matias That was the original intention, but once the site name changed the overall goals for the site also changed, and not for the better. Personally, I know of no other forums in which aren't echo chambers to some extent.

@skado There was no legal conflict that I was aware of, and some of those associated with the IDW movement like Rubin for example were directly involved in IDW.Community's creation, as Rubin is friends with Admin on here. The switch to the SLUG format was mostly Admin's idea, he wanted the site to engage in more controversial topics and take a similar in your face approach that the progressive crowd uses, and started to focus more on unrestricted speech than structured debates that was common among those from the IDW movement. Of course once Admin made such a move, the site saw an immediate increase in radicals who otherwise were censored on most other sites, and since then the site hasn't really been the same.

I don't use the SLUG format, still only use the original IDW format. I was the second individual who started an account on IDW, and I prefer to remember the site's original mission and not focus so much on the free speech part. On a side note, SLUG has become so controversial a site, that I'm hearing multiple antivirus softwares are flagging the site as malicious, and public WiFis have blacklisted SLUG, which says quite a bit...

@SpikeTalon Looking at this thread it occurs to me that one could make a life's work out of tracking the nomadic whackos that pollute the web. When it comes to origins and pedigree, I don't give a rat's ass. IMHO, we need to focus on the fundamentals and concepts being promoted, not the subterfuge.

@p-nullifidian You're certainly right about the first part there. As for the second half of your reply, in some cases might be easier said than done. The chicanery wielded by some of these online personalities have a way of heavily influencing their followers, which in turn assures quackery and conspiracy theories continue to get promoted, attention of which they don't rightly deserve.

@Matias Either IDW.Community.com or the mobile app with the same name. Doesn't really matter that much at this point being they both are pretty much the same site, and I'm sticking to IDW mostly for symbolic reasons.

No, sorry, teasing the mentally sub-normal is not and approved of form of entertainment these days.

I helped a couple of members from this site on that other site but the racism made my stomach turn, I deleted my account.

I have been volunteering here for nearly five years now, daily. And off and on over there when I have the stomach for it.

But I don’t have any interest in throwing sand in the gears. I don’t think the gears need more sand. Not sure what metaphor I’d prefer, but not sand. Maybe light. Hopefully light.

The clenched fist logo tells us what slug means.

A slug is another term for a bullet, but perhaps in this case the more appropriate definition is the slang term for a ‘lazy or slow moving individual.’

I wouldn’t say that slug.com and agnostic.com are necessarily opposites. A religious or faith based website would seem to be a better contrast to agnostic.com than a site dedicated to a particular political stripe.

A slug is also slang for a punch…and I guess from the clenched fist logo…that’s exactly what SLUG does mean.

@Marionville Thank you for confirming what definition they wish it to be. Personally, I have no intention of visiting this site and we, of course, reserve the right to apply the most derisive definition of the word “slug” as the shoe fits. 😉

I have no interest in getting into "did to and did not" conversations or the same in "is to and is not." I make my statement and you either believe me of you do not believe me. It is nice to have a reference spot that you can quote as evidence but my belief in who wins an argument is based simply on one of the parties getting tired of "did to and did not." You think you "won" because they quit responding. Maybe they simply no longer want to play the game.

Know of it. Never been there. No interest in doing so.

Me neither….I don’t even want to have a nosey around there!

I was blocked by the conservative group here in the first week I joined Agnostics before I even had a chance to see what they had to offer. I’m sure I am already blocked there at slug as well. They see the word Liberal and block. I wish you well in trying to help them see another point of view. 😉

@Matias You’re so right! I never got a chance to engage back and forth with the conservative group, so couldn’t throw any sand in the gears. 😉

Ya can't really butt heads with them. Drop a few one liners, a couple of zingers, burst their bubble and move on.
They will gang up on you instantly.

I've Never been there btw.

Many of us have been aware of slug for some time.

I have ZERO interest engaging with anyone there.
It's enough that I have to deal with those stupid fucking assholes in real life.
I'm not going to deliberately seek them out online.
I don't need the additional aggravation.

I do, however, wish you well.

You say things so well, so often. 👍

@Beowulfsfriend Thank you. I try.
