Now that we've more than 300 groups, it's time to come up with a list of categories (e-hem, "groupings" ) for them where a group can have, let's say, up to 3 categories. Ideally, we'd have 20-30 total categories. Would like to get suggestions for the list before we implement it. Here's what I have so far:

Activism
Art
Belief/Religion/Atheism/exReligious (better word? multiple categories?)
Books
Culture
Conservatism (US/UK terminology issues)
Film/Movies
Fan Groups
Fitness
Food/Diet
Gender
Geographic (already a "category" )
Health
Hobbies/Interests
Humor
Liberalism (US/UK terminology issues)
Music
Political
Random (or the dreaded "Other"?)
Science
Sexuality
Tech
Writing (merge with "Books"?)

Will there be a way we can search for groups? Besides looking at long, long lists.

Agree...
We need a word/ phrase search across the entire database.

Can we have a debate section?

I refuse to debate delusion believers the irrational question assuming the gibberish sound gawd is a real word to cite evidence pro or con. ....there is zero evidence. ...the alleged deity Jehovah YHWH JEEBUSH GHOSTholes is as absurd as debating the existence of Pinocchio. ...wooden boys do not come to live for love from the wood carver

@GreenAtheist
It dsoent have to be religion. There are millions of different things to debate besides that. Besides I think we came here to get away from the religion aspect....

Minneapolis Atheists are hundreds out of closet thousands in closets Madison FFRF will help you organize local Atheists in Ridgeland. ...don't assume you are isolated or alone.... 25 % of Americans have scientific training in critical thinking 9% consistently answer polls as Atheists

@PeopleSuck agreed we are here to get away from hell threats and heaven bribes. ...ignore religious terrorists or block them when they troll in here

Some combination of the following terms
Inspire/Motivate/Upbeat
Happiness might be combined with Inspire/Motivate or Health

Otherwise, my group, Positive Vibes, will have to fall under Random (Other) which obviously I'd rather not. ?

nature and environment?
Science and technology merged?
Art/music /books/film?
just a thought

So the categories and the groups will be under these main Theme/headings? I think that will help out with a lot of confusion on where things are located at, what to look for if someone is trying to find something specific & free up the long list of categories on here as well. When does this go into affect?

found it.. its all set up.. I think I did it right but we will see.

S & M, Bondage and...
....

...uhhh....sorry!

Wrong site! 😛

That's a group within sexuality... or could/should be

I'd also suggest Group Posts are only something you see if you log into the group.

I like the posts but I don't want always want them to be first on my feed.

@ScienceBiker Oh? You didn't see the toggle for it on the settings page? Perhaps look again 😉

@ScienceBiker

@ScienceBiker this. yes this very much.

@ScienceBiker I think about that more. I might be able to make a setting that restricts viewing a post page (with comments) unless you're a member but I don't know if it's constructive for the community to block showing the title's of the posts.

@Admin I found it under edit group settings.

@Admin Hiding groups isn't a good idea, it can be unsettling to some others. Using messenger, cell #'s or email would be best use for private groups. Also if you want to hide comments or posts from people, are you really part of the community then?

Might we separate Politics (as in current issues) from Political Philosophy, possibly Political Philosophy (Progressive) and Political Philosophy (Conservative). Avoids ambiguity with words Liberalism and Conservatism. Just a thought.

A further thought, US Politics should be a separate group, since it is major topic here.

The dewy decimal classification system works for libraries, and could be used here.

000 – Computer science, information & general works
100 – Philosophy and psychology
200 – Religion
300 – Social sciences
400 – Language
500 – Pure Science
600 – Technology
700 – Arts & recreation
800 – Literature
900 – History & geography

There are subdivisions within each category.

Libraries still use it , huh.

@buzz13 I'm sure they do, unless they've been shut down. Why would someone actually drive to a library anymore?

I would suggest adding "TV" to Film/Movies as I am one of those people that think it was a crime to cancel the show Firefly after only one season.

Me, too, @MLRoach. I don't know what they were thinking ...

@Lauren They were thinking small, costs and earnings. IMO it was a bad decision. Love that series.

@EdEarl I agree they were short-sighted. I guess no one told them how much money fandoms spend once they find something they like. 🙂

3

Instead of "Belief/Religion/Atheism/exReligious" I would simply use "Religion & Spiritualism). Philosophy should be included and needs to be its own category, not lumped with another. I would also add: "Communication" (verbal, written, et. al.), "Ethics & Morality," "Economics," "Education," "Environment," "Family," "Foreign Policy," "Geography," "Government," "History," "Literature," "Media," "Politics & Political Ideology" (with conservatism and liberalism as sub-categories), "Self Improvement," "Society & Culture" and "Technology."

suggestion for belief: isms and ifs

For your political groupings Left wing and Right wing might work, as that terminology is fairly consistent.

Nature and Environment needs to get a guernsey.

Travel is another one.

Food/Diet and Fitness could most likely be rolled into one.

Culture is a fairly ambiguous term, are we talking Pop Culture or Comparative Cultures.

Most likely should be Film/Movies/TV.

Photography is also not represented.

Kimba Level 7 May 24, 2018

photography seems to fit under art

what does "get a guernsey " mean ? 🙂

@btroje It's a jumper. Refers to being selected for a team.

@sarahjustme Or even vice versa. As a Sci-fi lover the media doesn't matter as much as the genre.

@admin Here's a link to the list I proposed over a month ago in the Senate group

Great, thanks for reminding me 🙂

Suggested changes to your list / definitions
Human Rights including law, implementation, protection and recognition.
Philosophy rather than beliefs etc.
Merge books with writing and includes poetry - the egg gave the chicken.
Sexuality, gender and diet belong under health.
Political should include conservatism and liberalism when referring to politics otherwise part of philosophy or health.

@Admin my hosted groups updated to new list.

Languages?

Writing is the foundation of most books, so books and writing could both fall under the general heading of literature. The same goes for stage plays, screen plays, radio scripting, poetry, and any other form of writing.

Perhaps you already have something similar that I have overlooked but it would be nice to have a group of single middle-aged vegetarians who are looking for a perennial partner.

First, I feel like category is the wrong verbiage for the feature as described. Since most groups will be cross listed into 2-3 of these, I feel the contemporary word for the feature would just be "group tags". I just think it explains the functionality much more efficiently. I think "category" in this day and age implies a 1-to-many mapping and that's why people are suggesting more narrow words than the list above.

That being said, I think this is a great idea overall. I would definitely like "writing" to remain separate as it implies user created original content as opposed to books. Or perhaps with thinking it of tags, it could be "literature/original work" so that some groups could be tagged "music/original work", "art/original work" and "original work" would be a collection of user created content of all media types.

Another benefit of thinking in terms of tags is that "random" and "other" are implied by "untagged". And "politics/US" vs "politics/AU" become explicit regional categorizations.

1

I would suggest cyber security, though that could fall under the tech category. I'd also suggest gun debate, but that would most likely fall under politics.

Is it me or do i see no... Philosophy? ... or are we to merge philo with... religion...? hmmm...

Sadoi Level 7 May 24, 2018

doesnt that fall in with belief?
