A couple of friends bought a brand nesly constructed house... and when they moved in they found a cat had decided it also lived there... They name her Blue (The breed of the cat was a Russian Blue).
Later, Blue, brought home a friend, which didn't really get a name so much as a title, "The Tuxedo Cat". And, so my friends then had two cats which they never went looking for.
So, the above example of a cat walking into a house and deciding "I live here now" is pretty accurate.
Cats also control the vermin population. Mine cats spiders and other buglies. They're far more useful than many politicians.

Posted by KilltheskyfairyPersonally I think cats should be higher on the fun line and lower on the effort. (Dragons do sound like fun.)
