Milkweed pests in central Illinois. Attached are pictures of the pest I most frequently see on my common milkweed plants. I'm not sure what they are called but look like some type of beetle to me.
They are much more prone to attack milkweed growing close together in clusters than individual plants. Therefore, I have begun placing plants in containers among my flowers.
They mate at the top of the plant and my method for controlling them is just to flick them off or shake the top of the plant until they fall. I'm sure they are very sexually frustrated because by the time they climbed back to the top of the plant a day or two later I am back to flick them off again.

One of few insects to tolerate Milkweed.
