NY State Dept. of Ed. has an after-school and summer program for K-8 grade students called CROP (Creating Rural Opportunities Partnership). CROP students must receive STEM training and do some community service.
The school system with which I volunteer will be establishing several wildflower gardens around town and building some Mason bee hotels plus some butterfly houses in a effort to help save our wild pollinators. The wildflower gardens provide a variety of pesticide-free food sources, which will improve the health of pollinators in two ways: better diets than monoculture crops provide and reducing their exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides.
