I am the mother of a high functioning autistic child.
How old? If under 15, that's usually measured by verbal and academic ability. This does not always mean able to function independently in society as an adult.
I think the key is "high functioning" most likely challenging at some ages. Last year I was asked to supervise a group of kids with aspergers while their parents met with some government dude. These kids were all high functioning, ok very energetic, but is was a breeze. Great kids, very intelligent and once engaged individually and that connection was made the afternoon was very pleasant, I had a couple of parents remain and a few grandmothers.
That’s great.

Posted by MelbatesMy nephew is high functioning autistic. One friend is Asperger's. My "second mom's" grandson is Asperger's. And, another friend is higher functioning autism than my nephew.
