During WW2, fighter pilots in the South Pacific armed their planes with . 50cal machine guns, with ammo belts that were 27 feet before being loaded in. If a pilot expended all their ammo on a target, they gave it "The Whole Nine Yards", which is where the saying came from.
I love trivia. It really does come in handy sometimes.
My youngest son lettered in Quiz Bowl in high school every year and never told us! I found the letters in a drawer when he went off to college. I asked him why he didn’t tell anyone and he said it wasn’t a sport and didn’t count! I framed them, of course! Lol
