Dust storm on Mars is now GLOBAL.

Curiosity is capturing images of the ening dust "haze". Since its battery is nuclear powered, Curiosity does not face same risk as Opportunity. Instruments are also said to be at low risk.

Fantastic time to be a planetary scientist (I am not)!

Not raising a conspiracy here but, the self portrait of the rover does not show a pole holding a camera. Was the camera deposited on a rock or something? was it Matt Damon?

I do not believe we've sent Matt Damon to Mars yet. 😉

@LaMariposa cool thanks!

Mars is a beautiful planet! This storm adds to its beauty.

Wow, this was a good read. I wonder if the clouds have a red look to them, you know, when the particles are in the air. Hum... Thanks for the link.

Georgy303 Level 6 June 21, 2018

this is speculation but there would be 2 reddening effects: 1 from the orange, red colour of the sand in the storm which is mostly composed of rusted iron (were most of the planets potential oxygen is bound and locked in) and 2, from the scattering of the solar light (filter most wavelength but the reds remains) due to the dust in the air, similar to a sunset.

@Lukian Yep - small particles scatter shorter wavelengths so the longer wavelength (red) remain.

@Lukian Thanks for the insight. I'll look this up. Sounds interesting.

@Lukian, @LaMariposa Oh, yeah, colors are wavelengths also. I'm a Sonographer, so I'm familiar with sounds as wavelengths, I forgot that colors are wavelengths too.

Posted by starwatcher-alI missed the early phases of the eclipse but the clouds mostly left during totality. All in all a great eclipse. Next one is Nov. 8-22
