In the early 1900's ships carried mostly freight, immigrants and mail. The RMS part of RMS titanic stood for royal mail steamer. Titanic went down with 600,000 pieces of mail, and oddly enough a car a Renault 2 cylinder that on a good day might hit 45mph. The people part was 1st class, 2nd class and steerage. The problem was there was a coal strike going on at the time, so Star unloaded their other ships coal and passengers. Which means there were passengers on Titanic that were going on her maiden voyage whether they liked it or not. thing is, all you hear about is Titanic, but the first ship out was the Olympic, and it set sail in the spring of 1911. Star lines was in a race with Cunard to build the gest, fastest, most luxurious liner in the north Atlantic shipping lanes. Cunard had the Lusitania and the Mauretania and Star had the Olympic to be followed by the Titanic and the Britannic.
