There are a lot of myths associated with Titanic. One I heard a lot was the lookouts did not have binoculars. They didn't, a last minute crew change had the guy with the key transferred while the key was in his pocket. Wouldn't have made any difference if they did, when you are looking for a hole in a hole having binoculars isn't going to help. The lookouts were in the wrong place, it's 70 ft. from the water to the rail where jack and rose were trying to fly in the movie. It's another 70ft. from there to the crows nest where the lookout were. It was a clear night with no moon and the ocean was like glass, looking down from 140ft. above the water with no moon and no ocean waves, you're not going to see shit. They should have been where Jack and Rose were, with the stars in the background they could have seen icebergs way off because they would have been blocking the stars.
