Ice berg warnings are something you hear about a lot. E.J. Smith had been sailing ships for Star Lines for 25yrs, in fact this was do be his last voyage before he retired, and it happens the same way every year when the polar ice cap thaws every spring the bergs come down what's called the Labrador Current between Newfoundland and land, so the fact they were coming up to ice berg alley was no surprise. Smith made a course correction on Sat. so they would hit iceberg alley 15 miles further south. Officer of the deck Murdock and Smith talked about it when he started his shift saying the icebergs would be harder to see in the calm water with no caps hitting against the base of the bergs. So having iceberg warnings in his pocket didn't mean anything was wrong.
