HAVE YOU HEARD OF ROBERT INGERSOLL?
St-Sinner comments on Sep 17, 2019:

Do we need religion to provide a sense of justice?
brentan comments on Sep 17, 2019:
Probably not anymore but I think we need to remember the religious notions that brought us to this point. I'm saying that because I feel respect for justice is falling in direct proportion to the fall in respect for religion.
Remiforce replies on Sep 17, 2019:
In the past, our ideas of justice were based largely on the religious concepts of good & evil, Respect for religion is falling in many parts , although it is rising elsewhere. Respect for justice is falling because many people are beginning to realize it has been co opted by powerful special interests & no longer works for the people, if it ever really did.. God has been seen in the past as the Great Policeman in the Sky, who enforces the rules & punishes hidden crimes in the afterlife, but we are rapidly losing that comforting notion.
Do we need religion to provide a sense of justice?
St-Sinner comments on Sep 17, 2019:
What people did is another story. The answer to your question is - No, we do not need religion to provide a sense of justice. Justice comes from the sense of right and wrong that does not come from religion. That was how we were brainwashed to believe that goodness was in the church and world ...
Remiforce replies on Sep 17, 2019:
We can make a rational sense of justice based on enlightened self interest & our preceptions of the greatest good for the greatest number. But since people are imperfect, the justice we create will always be imperfect, based more on our needs, or more accurately the needs of the powerful among us, than an ideal. But still we should strive to express the ideal of justice

No. How could there be? The universe at large isnt just. Local nature isnt just. If a person wants justice they have to work together to create it
Remiforce replies on Sep 17, 2019:
The universe & nature definitely are not just. I believe the only justice we have is that we as a people create for ourselves, imperfect as that is. Often justice is distorted by powerful interests.

Judaism did not have a devil before the contact (conquest by) the Persian/babilonians. The serpent of paradise was just a serpent, the concept of this dark god came from zoroastrism where the good and the evil gods are equal, but their powers are pumped by the followers. So Judaism absorbed this...
Remiforce replies on Sep 12, 2019:
Zoroastrianism is said to be the world's oldest religion. This whole dichotomy between good & evil (Ahriman & Ahoramazdah) that seeped into Judiasm & Christianity came from them. The Parsees in India still practice it. If YHWH is the source of everything, & in christian mythology, god is all powerful, all knowing, all loving, where did evil (the devil) come from. This involves Theodisy, which involves a contradiction between the supposed nature of god & the reality of the world. If god is all those things, how come we have suffering & injustice. We have industrial scale killing & maiming in wars, good people getting cancer, & sociopaths becoming billionaires on Wall St... So god is not all powerful & has to put up with a lot of nonsense, or not all knowing & just doesn't know, or not all loving & just doesn't care. We are the ones who determine if things are good or bad for us from our own perspective. An earthquake or tornado may kill people, but they are just natural phenomenon not caring about our concerns.. Maybe god's supposedly infinite conscouusness is not the same as our limited consciousness. Perhaps god is beyond such dualities as good & evil. perhaps to god it is all the same whether we live, suffer, die. People rebel against this concept. They want the good parent in the sky who will protect them from evil.. But what we want is not necessarily what is. Get over it.

Genocide of lawyers seems rather extreme. Many are disgusted by the unethical & apparently amoral character of many lawyers. I've always believed the further you stay away from doctors the healthier you'll be & the further you stay away from lawyers, the wealthier you'll be. The law is complicated mainly because lawyers, & judges who are big lawyers, make it complicated to increase the profits of the legal profession. Many lawyers become politicians or lobbyists, where they can further screw things up. Our legal system is very unfair & biased toward the rich. Lawyers may generally be unethical & corrupt, but they are not stupid. They know where the money is. Why are lawyers getting 30 to 50% of settlements + expenses? Why are ambulance chasing lawyers putting ads all over television?

It is said he is a fallen angel who was driven from heaven & now is a rebel who apparently is conducting guerilla warfare against "god". He is evil. But if god is all powerful, all knowing, all powerful, how is that possible? Is it that "god" has a Jungian shadow & outsources all his demonic impulses to this Devil so he can preserve deniability. "I'll take the high road, Satan, & you can do the dirty work. You'll be well rewarded with god like power for preserving my reputation." @powder To my mind, "Creation is not necessarily "free will". We may have been destined from the beginning of creation to create what we create.. We have to have the illusion of free will to think & act, but no one knows if it is real. Symbols are not reality either. Logos (thought/word) becoming a person (flesh) becoming light which is thought. Beautiful poetry, but does it mean anything. Some say knowledge/thought created the principles which are the illusion of reality. Mystics say they can experience this reality directly. But us non-mystics still wonder. The dance of positive & negative (electron/neutron, yin/yang) is said to have created the universe. The "waters" may be the depths of unconsciousness that underlies consciousness. We also have a duality between unconscious & consciousness. Water is plural, as it is found in different bodies, but is basically all the same, H2O. It is both singular & plural, thus the symbol of duality. Does this mean anything or is it just word magic woo-woo

Trump played an effective chief executive on the Apprentice for 12 yers. Some people thought he actually was one & not an apparently corrupt, incompetent clown. He also got some help from dufus Comey & Trump's good friends in Moscow. But Kierkegaard said "will", not "wish". He is thinking of one pointed purpose, not just feckless wishing. If you will yourself to get a million dollars, you will take concrete steps toward that end. Whether you succeed or not is not the point, focused activity for a purpose you choose fosters happiness, although it doesn't necessarily assure it. The journey brings happiness, not the destination. Wishing without action often brings unhappiness because it is self defeating. It is like looking at porn without having sex.

consciousness as far as we know is the property of a healthy brain, any other interpretations are empty opinions.
Remiforce replies on Sep 7, 2019:
@Happy_Killbot It is interesting but not bizarre. The science of brain wave states is well documented. The awareness of people in deep coma is very well documented. Apparently there are many forms of a state that might be called consciousness. We are talking about physicalism & dualism, in the sense we have a possible duality between the body & consciousness. To say consciousness is only a by product of physical activity in the body seems reductionist. Certainly that the expression of consciousness involves our brain state seems obvious, but to say they are one seems an unfounded assumption. Association does not mean unity. Brain function depends on electrical as well as neuro-hormonal activity. Electricity is energy, not matter in its current state--it is particles & waves. Wires (neurons) may conduct electricity, but they are not energy. To reduce consciousness, which in our experience results from brain activity, to a purely physical phenomenon, seems to my mind a contradiction in terms There are too many mysteries here, such as the relationship between the energy in our brains & dark energy/matter. Then we come to the connection of our individual awareness to the real state of existence. No one knows what that is, & I don't pretend to, as some do. But I am not arrogant enough to say even my expanded conscientiousness is the essence of existence. Don't worry, I have just begun to ascend the woo-woo heights

Remiforce replies on Sep 7, 2019:
@Happy_Killbot To discuss a few of the interesting points you made, are not dreams a form of consciousnessness. Neuro-physicists tell us there are various states of electronic activity in the brain-alpha, beta, delta, & theta. Theta is an extremely deep level reached by very experienced meditators, but it does involve awareness, even though all normal senses appear shut down. Medical personnel have discovered people in a deep coma are aware of things going on around them. . I think we must define what we mean by consciousness, as it apparently is not just normal waking awareness (Beta). As far as I know, the word "proffer" has long been used in law. When someone prepares to turn state's evidence, they submit a "proffer", which is a revelation of the useful information they can give. You guys are having a very interesting discussion.
