The Chieftains with Ry Cooder San Patricio album
An interesting story of how a whole bunch of Irish immigrants landed in NY only to be immediately inducted into the US army to fight against Mexico in the 1840s. At some point, they came to the conclusion that they were just poor farmers fighting other poor farmers and changed sides. It is a complete negation of the American dream and a story that Hollywood would never go near.
The album (which unfortunately is only available as individual tracks on Youtube) tells most of the tale in instrumentals. The Chieftains taking the Irish role and Ry and friends the Mexican. Towards the end, you can hear the fiddles, bodhrans and penny whistles merge with trumpets and guitars.
