I went to China in 2013 with my daughter and her in-laws who are Chinese. We did a very inexpensive tour through China Spree, which covered air fare, hotels, meals, tours, bus excursions with narration.
It might not be the way everyone would want to travel, but it was a great overview of Shanghai and Bejing. We got to see the main sights, the Great Wall, The Pearl Tower, the glitzy side of town as well as the very old world streets lined with shops. It was very interesting and memorable. It's something a person could do alone or in a group. Everything was scheduled.
My daughter's mother-in-law speaks Chinese, so we did escape part of the tour to take a taxi to eat at a favorite restaurant, which was cool.
We really saw a lot of features, just in those 2 cities, which was enough for me.

I appreciate your response. I am going with a small group of 5 and we are doing a tour very similar in three cities. Mostly Shanghai and Beijing. Inexpensive and includes airfare. PM me if you think of other specific suggestions. I am really anxious to see the terracotta warriors!
@EyesThatSmile Oh the terracotta warriors was something we weren't able to see during our trip, but we sure heard about them! I'm sure you'll enjoy the trip, even if you don't know what to expect for part of it. Portions of our tour were a bit touristy, but still interesting.
I just enjoyed looking out the bus window and listening to the narration and answers to questions other travelers had. I was a very passive traveler, and that worked well for me. Got lots of photos at places I never thought I'd be in my lifetime. Pretty cool!
