I’m a classical liberal, nowadays I’m finding myself aligning with, or at least sharing sentiments with, more right-leaning ideas. Like religion’s inherent tribalism, I’m vexed by the tribalism on the left, swapping religious beliefs for identitarian associations. How do you non-believers on the right combat the religious-right while staying true to your values?

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I think Danny is asking how we interact with the religious right. I try not to look at it as ''combat'' first off.. My approach is to just calmly discuss politics at first, so they know we have a lot in common, and can have a civil discussion about things.. Then if religion comes into play, I continue the civility coupled with astute observation, facts and reason in hopes they're open minded enough to accept my position without prejudice. Most are, and that's when we start talking about other things. I know there are some of them out there that will always look at me differently, and that's fine, as long as they know from the start that we do have a lot in common, and l'm not a lunatic. My only real problems I've had in the past were with close family members, but with the recent passing of my mother, there really isn't anyone left that l'm worried about. l hope that helps.

Over the years I have started viewing Christianity as American heritage, and ultimately the west's heritage. It is important that it is preserved to a certain degree, or else we will end up like communists. I grew up in a moderate Christian household and have never despised my moderate religious upbringing. I tend to focus more on extremism.

Trump realizes we conservatives unfortunately right now can’t win without support from the religous right and caters to them even though he himself is likely not a Christain. Myself if I have to choose between the religous right or the liberal left on politics will choose the religous right every time even though I don’t agree with them about their religion. I do get disturbed by the religous right spouting their hatred toward the gays and trying to force poor women to have a child they don’t want by outlawing abortion with some of them I know being so extreme as to want to force a woman to have the child of a rapist. In spite of this gay rights and abortion rights seem to be intact for the most part. I just can’t align myself with the socialist gun grabbing left who seem to want to strip us hard working conservatives of our rights and seem intent on turning this country into a socialist dictatorship.

I think that’s fair, well said. However, I wouldn’t conflate the “left” with liberalism. You’re a liberal with a small L. Leftists are often regressive and illiberal, because of the means they attempt to use to enact change at a political and social level, most specifically wielding the State as an enforcer of their vision.
I too could probably be described as a classical liberal, and understand the frustration with today's tribalism. I try to make decision, in voting and otherwise, based upon the principals of what is better for the individual (individual rights being the primary concern).
