QUESTION RE GOBECKLI TEPE:
The 14 12,000 year-old temples at Gobeckli Tepe in Turkey have smaller, older, altars under them that may be 15,000 years old. Found by ground penetrating radar, but the last I heard none had been excavated because of damage to gorgeous complex temples above them.

But I wonder if any more exploration of older altars beneath has been done. I only have a phone and limited access to good archaeology search engines... Anyone else curious about this?

Best film on Gobekli Tepe

I enjoyed that video! I couldn't help thinking of a development of meaning from survival to psychological. The birth of existential thought, perhaps. And that thought articulated through religion for millenia.

Yes... Precursor to Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs / Self- Actualization pyramid. In many cultures it was an able-bodied self- actualized "young prince" that was sacrificed, being judged worthy of it as a representative of his people.

I made it through part of the National Geo video. Surprise, surprise, it claims it's a slam dunk it's temples, depictions of Gods, etc. Basically BS. [drmsh.com] It's a shame, National Geo was once a great organization, now it's a front for evangelicals.

And, you know for a fact it’s not?

@Rob1948 I'm not the one making the wild unsupported claim. We do not have a freaking clue what the structures at Gobecki Tepe are, they predate cities and actual temples by thousands of years. That's a FACT. They predate Stonehenge by thousands of years, and we don't know what its purpose was. To speculate they are temples is simply projecting our current religious culture on a culture that predated civilization. To claim those speculations are fact just shows how religion has insinuated itself into modern thought. The worst thing about assuming they are temples is that it closes down other avenues of speculation and investigation. Amazing discovery, throws a lot of our assumptions out the window. I hope someday we get more insight into the site, but right now any conclusions about what it was are premature. And why, exactly, are you using a Creationist argument?

They SACRIFICED victims there... beheaded them. You should watch it all. Don't let YOUR prejudices warp the science on the site. You are confusing a belief in gods with the existence of gods, IMO.

@MoonTigerII I prefer to read papers by actual archeologists, not watch nonsense produced by religion apologists. I know how false arguments work, the video was peppered with them from the beginning, no need to watch further.

@Druvius Beheaded victims mirrored Headless T-shaped monoliths. Very deliberate corelation. This IS the best video you will find.

@Druvius E.B. Banning's only evidence for residential use of structures is flint knapping and food remains. Of COURSE flint tools had to be constantly made and sharpened on site and up to 60 workers had to be fed on site.No other evidence supports his claim and a lot of evidence supports temple claims by the majority of archaeologists.

@MoonTigerII Nothing supports the "temple" claims other than it's a big structure with decorations. And apparently modern people really want to think pf them as temples.

@Druvius Once again you are ignoring the SACRIFICES. Then the monuments were all very carefully buried fairly soon after they were built to PRESERVE them for 12,000 years -you don't do that to houses or convention centers. They had huge significance to the people that made them with a great deal of communal effort and purpose. There were no other structures around anything like them.. clearly special structures! If you watched the film I wouldn't have to tell you all this. And the film is presented and narrated by a Ph.D. ARCHEOLOGIST, not a religious proponent. You are skewing things terribly here with your own prejudices and almost no data to support them.

Unlike with Egyptian works none of the animals seem to mix with humans. I have only read a little about this site and find it fascinating.

@MoonTigerII The new National Geo, run by evangelicals? I guess I can risk it, lol.

Not yet, though am dismayed that the woo merchants have claimed Gobekli Tepe for their own and searches related to it require BS detection.
