New techniques, technology, and innovations are opening up the possibilities for understanding the past in ways that were unimaginable a decade ago or less. As a history teacher, I hope that the application of science will engender a wider interest in the study of the past, and with it the realization that history is not the dry sum of dates, battles, and sundry kings that populate the pages of textbooks, but the understanding of the everyday experience, perspective, and expectations of others not so very unlike ourselves, throughout the centuries and across the planet.
