Sometimes I think I hate this thing that makes life hard for my son. Then I realize that it is part of him and that it makes him this the wonderful person I love and he is perfect just as he is. And then I just feel stupid and embarrassed and maybe I shouldn't post this. But it's social media so f--- it. I get so confused sometimes because I can see so many sides and I wonder which is valid, how can I judge, and what if I'm wrong.
I had a conversation a while ago and the subject was about autism and the autism gene and if it were possible to remove it and if you could, would you/should you?
The bit that stuck with me was if you remove it, it's like pulling on a thread and maybe it's a small one but it could also be the cohesive force that binds it all together.
Sure some/most autisitc kids need a bit more patience but autism is part of who and what they are, take it away and it's not them. My eldest daughter is on the spectrum and if she suddenly rocked up with it (autism) missing I'm not sure I'd know who she was any more. She's brilliant as she is, it's her, she just is
Because my kid is high functioning, yeah, I wouldn't know him without it. But I know some people raising lower functioning kids who would probably be more than happy to get rid of that gene.
Kids on the spectrum are awesome. Yea, there are good days, and there are bad, but I wouldn't change my son for anything. The ability to get up and dance like nobody's watching, even when everyone is watching, makes me think we all should have a little autism.
I love this answer

Posted by altschmerzI was diagnosed with autism by a psychologist after a day of testing, but my current therapist keeps saying she doesn't think I have it (or I'm a "little bit" autistic).
