It occured to me the other day hay many of our US Douglas Adams fans would not quite understood one the jokes . Ie " They have been in orbit monitoring our TV broadcasts for 20 years and the only conclusion they have come up with was never give a loaded water pistol to a glove puppet " . Here`s why

Shooty is quite the little twat, isn't he?

I don't remember that joke. It dawned on me while rereading HHG this time that my edition was "Americanised." For instance, Dent doesn't search for the demolition plans with a torch (which made for a very entertaining mental image when I heard the BBC series.) He carried a flashlight.

In the interest of pointless disclosure, I have a visceral distaste mixed with horrified amusement for costumed characters and some puppets. I don't know why. The reactions from the panel of The Big Fat Quiz to Mr. Blobby speak for me.

-We used to get Punch and Judy puppets at the seaside. This is an unbelievably non PC show dating back though the ages which has wife beating and infanticide as part of it`s plot. The characters themselves would give you nightmares

I never got Mr. Blobby - he seemed the naffest totem of the naffest of naff middle class smugness that passes for a sense of humor.
