Noob tats for middle aged white dudes? I have a bunch of serious questions if you all don't mind.

So I'm mid 40s here. I have no tats. Over the years, I've considered various possibilities --- but as an agnostic, I admit that I've never figured out what is important enough to me to have permanently inked. I see so many guys get endless meaningless tats (like the tribal tattoos so popular...always makes me want to ask, "Uhm....so what tribe are you a part of??" ). The idea of Bugs Bunny or skull designs just seems unusual to me. I guess I'm just looking symbols or designs that are personally meaningful.

I have a few ideas now that I've spent decades thinking about it haha.... So my questions....

  1. How old is too old to begin getting inked? I know the answer is always a resounding "you're never too old," but that's not entirely true. Just like one can be too fat to wear spandex, I'm sure there's a point in age that getting your first tattoo is just kinda weird.

  2. I'm a creative, nerdy, intellectual, adventurous type, but I'm not even remotely trendy nor am I even close to being a hipster. I get asked all the time if I'm a cop. Despite having spent years as a stoner, my "look" never allowed me to buy weed on the street. I just keep having this feeling that ink would look silly on me in the same way that big rings and gold chains would look silly on me -- some people can pull it off and others, well...no..... So any advice on knowing if there's a tattoo type of person?

  3. Where is the best place to get your first? Bicep? Back? Forearm? How large?

  4. Do you have any suggestions on color or style? While I can appreciate the bright, vibrant colors found on many tattoos, I can't help but think that simple b&w might be far more conservative for my personality type.

  5. What's your opinion about tats and cultural appropriation? Some people freak about it and some see no problem. Could a white guy get kanji without looking like a douche? Could a white guy get images of the Hawaiian Islands (very popular with locals)? I love Hawaii, lived there for awhile, wanna go back....and I've considered that.

  6. Why do you get tattoos? I don't mean to troll or create a debate -- I'm honestly interested in what motivates people not only to get one or more tattoos, but why they choose the designs they choose..... Sometimes it seems like people get them to draw more attention to themselves (which isn't a bad thing necessarily), sometimes people get them in some symbolic gesture to remember loved ones, but often people seem to get them for no real reason at all.... Over the years I've wondered this when trying to decide if it's something I wanted and why I might want it.

  7. Do you ever worry about being geriatric with a wrinkled Tweety Bird on your ass? haha...

So yeah, there are a few things that I'd like to get, maybe.... such as a Sacred Chao symbol, maybe some kind of stylized DMT molecule, and maybe a couple of "visions" I experienced while whacked outta my gourd on said DMT (walking with gods and communicating the extraterrestrials, even if in a drugged stupor, is a pretty powerful experience hah).

So....bottom line --- am I too old, too straight laced, too nerdy to get tattooed without just seeming like a 300lb hairy man in spandex? 🙂

(and yes, it's a self-confidence thing...in a perfect world, we all have perfect confidence, but this isn't that perfect world lol)

I'd love to pick your collective brains on all of this....sorry this post was so long.

Word of advice. What ever you decide to get, do not ever get one with a SO name. Only family. Cause when that SO is gone, you'll be trying to decide what tat to get to cover it up. And as far as age.....I'm 66 and still getting tats.

Age is irrelevant. The older you are, the more the chance that they are meaningful pieces.
Tattoo people are just people with tattoos.
My first tattoo is my son’s name at the location he got his one tattoo.
I like black. I’ve got some color, but most are, and will be, black.
Fuck people. There are a lot of shitty tats out there, though.
All of my tattoos are memorial.
No. I’m working on my body as I age, they’ll probably just look better over time.

Your age does not matter. Your first tattoo should be of your spirit animal. It should be black and white. It should be in a place that is covered up completely be the type of clothes you ordinarily wear. It should not be any bigger than your first. AND it should not be in the small of your back or contain any kind of Looney tunes or WB character.

I've tattooed people getting their first one in their 70s but they aren't for everyone, maybe it's not for you. Some people want meaning in their art some just like the art for itself, the reasons people do will vary almost as much as the people do. Having meaning like you are talking about is really a modern thing.

Dude! I'm not going to answer all your questions, but will touch on some:

First, I'm turning 57 next month. I've had tats less than 5 years. I think your age, and what other people think don't mean shit, TBH. This is about YOU. Tattoos are like wine, subjective. I agree with you about skulls and some of the crap people put on themselves, but if that's what they like, that's what they like. Power to 'em.

As for your personal choice of tat(s), totally up to you. Whatever is meaningful to you is all that matters. Location is also up to you. Some areas are much more painful than others, and that might be a factor. Also, ease of viewing (for you) may be something to consider. I have two large, elaborate tats; one on each upper-arm/shoulder. They are both meaningful to me (Groot on my right and a custom Tiki tat on my left).

So you do you, man.

I'm pushing 60, and at this moment in time I have 15 tattoos. The first one I got in my early 40's. None of them are small, however with a little work I can cover all of them if needed. The main thing to remember is that a tattoo is with you forever, so make sure it's something you want. Yes, you can get it covered over and yes, you can have it laser removed but they both cost money.

What is good for a first, or last tattoo is that it's something that speaks to you. My first tattoo was a shooting star. I love shooting stars so it was a perfect choice for me. My second tattoo was of a sleeping wizard on the man in the moon. I had been thinking of this tattoo for years, and one day my husband came home with a drawing that a co-worker did. It was perfect. None of my tattoos are flash (the pictures you see on the walls of tattoo shops); there were all drawn by my artist from either pictures I had or ideas.

Another thing I would HIGHLY recommend is to visit several shops before you make a decision on where to go. I visited three shops in Houston, Texas and was treated badly (they acted like I was trying to relive my youth and basically ignored me). I went into a shop in Porter, Texas and was not only warmly welcomed, they talked to me about what I was looking for in a tattoo and matched me up with an artist that had a similar vision.

Lastly, you need to look at the shop's portfolios. These show the tattoos that their artist have done in the past, and will give you an idea if they are a good fit. They are usually in the waiting room, but if they aren't ask for them. If they don't have any I would walk out. You want to have an idea if their artist will work for you.

You want the option to show it off or hide it. So don't get it on your face.
The sun will fade it so you want to be able to cover it when out naked.
Black is in vogue. White fades more quickly.
You can always add to it later
I got a tattoo in the '70's & boyfriends freaked out. It was a good test of tolerance
I also got a tattoo so if a serial killer got me, my body could be identified
What about a cannabis leaf?
You can bring a picture in of what you want or you could have a look at the portfolio of the studio. Then there is free form where the artist helps decide.
Age appropriate is 18-108
The chemical symbol for thujone or your favorite drug of choice, such as Coca Cola
