Bought a 6 pack of SIberian Kale plants today. I've been growing kale for the last 4-5 years, since I discovered how easy it is to grow. Shortly before that I caught an episode of Dr. Oz where they were talking about super foods and some uses. At that time kale was a hot "super food", so they made a smoothie with it, adding frozen banana, another green such as spinach or Romaine lettuce and a second fruit of choice. I bought some kale so I could try it and decided I liked it then when I found out how easily it grew, I was sold.
The only real problem with growing it is cabbage butterflies LOVE it for laying eggs. It is in the same family as cabbage (at least in butterfly minds) so when the little white devils start fluttering around my young kale, the battle is on. With some diligence and passing of the peak reproductive season, I eventually end up with plenty of kale. I make a mean Zuppa Toscana and several other soups with kale plus a kale, raisin, sunflower seed, broccoli(if I have it) and bacon bits salad with a Balsamic vinegar and mayo dressing.
Darn, now I'm wishing the kale was big enough to pick. I'm getting excited!

Just don't show it to people. 🙂 It is quite green and people (here anyway) look at it and go "Ewww!" I really enjoy the kale smoothies though, in fact I harvest kale through the summer/fall and after cleaning and removing the main stem, put it in a bag in the freezer. After it is frozen, I mash it. It breaks into little flakes which are more compact for freezer storage. Also, this adds more cold to the smoothie. With the frozen banana and kale, I don't have to add ice to get that thick, "shake" consistency in the smoothie.

Posted by 19dacar52I repotted my hoya plant. I was worried that it would not flower from shock but it is blooming.
