I'm getting to the point where I don't want to ask someone I haven't seen for a while how they've been. I was just asking as a courtesy. I really don't need to hear the minutiae of their life, their carpal tunnel syndrome, the cute little things their grandchild did, and their crabgrass problem for 45 minutes.

I prefer to answer "Living the dream! YOLO!" It's better than fine.

I like that one!

Oh yes. I particularly hate it when people gleefully run thro their list of ailments in great detail and with much pride. I think it's rude they haven't noticed my glazed eyes! And you know what's worse? When they start telling me what Joanne and Bill have done as if I'm expected to know who in hell Joanne and Bill are!

Joanne and Bill are their next door neighbor's grandkids' old high school friends who live in Saskatchewan. Don't you remember?

I love you people!!!

How have you been?

IamNobody Level 8 June 14, 2018

I'd respond, but Nobody's asking 🙂

@TheoryNumber3 I was just asking as a courtesy (Yes, I am trying to make a point)

@IamNobody I got it. And so was I. Should I start from high school or my first job?

@TheoryNumber3 No thank you. If you don't want to hear someone's else minutiae of their life then why should I? (I stand correct, still making a point)

@IamNobody Are you serious? You didn't hear her irony yet you espoused it yourself

Agreed! What I hate is when you see someone you barely know and they try to do the stop and chat. I'm not interested.

when that happens to me, I can feel my face heat up, my stomach tighten, and sometimes I even start seeing spots with the borders of my vision blackening.. But I'm also getting better at my answer to the: how have you been, what have you been going, and how are you? I'm getting better at preparing and replying with: "don't ask, 'cause I won't lie". No one has pushed for more after that response. And I have gotten so hardened, that now (well, for the last 20 yrs.) I have no interest in hearing about them if I'm not going to get paid to f*ing listen. $

@Plant1010J I agree completely. I have zero interest in the minutiae of daily living. I don't need to hear a run down of the weekend or day. Sometimes I wonder is it so much to ask for people to say something that actually matters?

I totally get this, but I also would rather them talk about themselves than want to talk about me. I find that because of that, I tend to gravitate toward chatty people, because I'm happy to just sit there and let them talk at me, as long as I don't have to be the center of attention. But yeah, some of the stuff I've listened to over the years...it's interesting what people get emotionally invested in.

I deeply care about my friends' problems.. as long as it's not a 40 minute monologue.. But strangers can talk to someone they know better. I was at the place where I dance a few weeks ago and a woman came up to me to introduce herself and proceeded to tell me the morbid story of her unfortunate life... including death, destruction and financial ruin. Aarrrggghhhh. I don't even know her. I listened and sympathized but made my getaway at the first opportunity.

What I find very uncomfortable is running into someone from your past (someone who's made no effort to keep in touch with you) and they start grilling you about what you're doing. Mostly, it seems they want to know to compare it to their life,
so they can feel they are doing better. I want to say, "I haven't been seeing you because I didn't want to. You don't care about me. I don't care about you." What I usually say is "Nothing."

Otterpop Level 6 June 14, 2018

What I usually say is I'd love to stay and chat but I'm running late! Bye!!!

How about people on social media who post pictures of what they had for lunch?

Heraclitus Level 8 June 14, 2018

You mean there are people who don't? LOL

When people start with rattling on and on, I have a tendency to tell them to knock it off. They usually tell me to go F*** myself and I answer , " sure wish I could, then I wouldn't have to be out in public".

I'm sorry I have to stand with Lady Road on this one
