We volunteer to work most 'family' holidays, letting the folks with kids take off for celebrations. We'll perhaps get away for a long weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and then have a trip to Hawaii scheduled for the end of January.
Even when we didn't have jobs that were open on holidays, we typically stayed close to home - I've never been a fan of traveling when schoolkids are out on vacation. We'll take shoulder season any time...
