Reminders of warmer weather. The robin is easy to identify, I think the other is a sparrow, but I tend to call all small brown birds sparrows . . .

The second bird is what we in the U.S. call either a house sparrow or an English sparrow. Technically, it's not a sparrow at all, but a weaver finch (don't ask me what the difference is). It's an introduced and invasive species here, best known among birders (twitchers, to you) for competing with bluebirds for nesting boxes, and usually winning. In North America, they're not often found far from human habitations; they rely on us for a lot of their food, which they get from garbage and farms (before cars were common, house sparrow populations in cities were higher because they could eat a lot of undigested grain from horse manure). One way to eliminate them from North America might be for all the humans to leave the continent for several years, but for some reason no one ever takes me seriously when I propose this.

Thank you, most informative. I like the solution you offer, But where would the North Americans go?

I'm an East Coast American....and I've never seen a "Robin" that looked like that...but my "Merlin ID" bird ID app says it is, indeed a European Robin!

Looks like an English sparrow but there are lots of sparrows that look similar, I also use sparrow as a generic for little brown birds.

Sparrow yes , Robin ?

It's a different bird from Europe and the original robin, the American robin is a thrush but called robin when seen by settlers because it also has a red breast.

@Buttercup Where I live now in eastern N Carolina the people used to eat robins , that original robin doesn't look like it has much meat on it , not that the N American robin has much ether .

@Besalbub Not much, I've eaten doves myself which are about the same size as an American Robin and the whole breast is smaller than a chicken thigh.

Euro robin. Not a thrush as the American robin is. Misnamed as usual..
