My only halfway decent pic of a blue heron, this year. These are spooky birds, at least in Pennsylvania. When I visited my sister in Florida a few years back I practically had to shove them out of the way when I went fishing.

I had some awesome pics of one on the beach (they're halfway tame there as they will wait beside the fishermen and steal the fish). He was only about 6 feet from me.
My pics were not backed up and the phone crashed, so I lost them ?

gorgeous bird - great pic. yes, wildlife that gets cosy & close as opposed to keeping a cautious distance freaks me a bit too.

That's what happens when people feed them.
@FrayedBear, i'm used to pigeons, magpies & such to do that, but as i'm no fisherwoman herons wouldn't eye me as a meal ticket, i s'pose.
Gorgeous birds - though not quite as gorgeous as our Grey Herons in Europe, in my opinion! I'm a bit afraid of them, though: they can stretch up so high and their beaks are so like daggers...

Try emus that do not need to stretch...not as sharp a beak but dangerous, particularly the claws.
There used be a rookery behind my Wisconsin property. Over 200 years old was the estimate. The clacking & squawking in the twightlight as they sparred for nest settling was rauchus & brought mind dinosaurs in the primordeal fog. The rookery blew down in a 1998 winter storm. They have dispersed but habitat is scarce. I have them & the great white hunting the edges of the pond. The heron, not the shark.
