So, to cut a long frustrating story very short, I decided to make a feeding station from an old wire antenna dish and a piece of 3/12 plastic pipe that would be totally pest proof and have plenty of feeding options, that was two months ago and so far it has worked far better than expected, no Rooks, no rats or squirrels as yet but a great variety of small birds, which I attribute to my own mix of seeds and nuts, (with NO wheat) I am pleased with the results, although it looks really crap it does the job... So far...

i don't quite understand why you call this a "long frustrating story". to me it sounds like a delightful experience with our smart feathered friends. are you sure you have the attitude required to commune with them?
the attempt to control & manipulate nature will inevitably result in failure, & i think it is hilarious ? ? ?
