Spending August in Big Bay, Michigan, again this year. This is the Big Bay Harbor of Refuge. The state of Michigan developed harbors of refuge all along the Great Lakes so that no boat would ever be more than 30 miles from a safe harbor. Big Bay is a very tiny town on Lake Superior in the upper Peninsula of Michigan.

It’s a darn cold lake, I’ll tell you that. Fortunately, there is a fairly warm (in summer), with a sand beach, inland lake just a half mile down the road in which to get one’s feet wet.
