I dyed this yarn with food coloring and vinegar. I guess that counts as something handmade? Right? The red one I'm calling Redshift and the multi-colored Handpainted I'm calling Decomposition of Light. I'm teaching myself to dye yarn via books, YouTube, and websites.

I hope you continue to post the results of what you learn.

Thank you. I really like doing this. So, I definitely will post it. I'll be sure to simulcast it here. 🙂

Nice colors!

Thanks! I'm going to finish off the box of McCormick's and try the less expensive brand to see which does better. Now that I'm getting familiar with food coloring, I want to try Jacquard Acid Dyes in the future.

Looks like you're headed in the right direction!

Couunts for sure. What are the best websites you have seen? HOw colorfast is that method of dying?

btroje Level 9 Mar 15, 2018

Thanks! It is surprisingly colorfast. The vinegar helps the animal fiber uptake the dye. Then the heating sets it. I rinsed it with Eucalan three times to be sure but no dye came out. I should do some experiments to see how it does in the Sun. I remember reading that Kool-Aid dyeing can fade in sunlight.

@IchbineineTomate what is eucalan?

@btroje Eucalan is a Delicate Wash. I use it to wash my crafted items be they knit, crocheted, dyed, or woven. There are a lot of other brands out there. There's a YouTube video with a breakdown of which does the best on which stains. I can find the URL if you'd like it?

These are the websites I've learned the most from. So, I consider them the best I've seen. Sorry for the massive amount of information. I read a lot.

cool. what kind of yarn? I tried dying wood with food coloring with little success so far... sigh.

hankster Level 9 Mar 15, 2018

Thanks!

I did this with Lion Brand's Fisherman's Wool in the Natural colorway. I have a frightening amount of websites and tutorials on yarn dyeing that I've amassed over the past few days. Totally willing to share if you want it?

thanks, but no thanks. I got projects lined up for eternity. not that I will do any of them but I have them ...lol

@hankster I know the feeling. My Ravelry queue is ridiculous. I have over five hundred projects waiting to be made...and I laugh and laugh at the notion of me having that much free time. 😛

@hankster
Lol..
Right?

Beautiful. I se left over easter egg dye to dye small amounts of roving. I spin yarn from it and make small items, like baby socks or mittens.

Spinliesel Level 8 Mar 15, 2018

Thank you. 🙂

That's something on my list to learn how to do. I don't have the resources or space for even a drop spindle right now. After I unlock this achievement, I want to focus on sewing.

Do you have pictures of your works available?

@IchbineineTomate she has shared quite a bit, look in the group pictures. There is another fiber artist too.

@Annaleda I'll search right now. Thank you. 🙂

@IchbineineTomate I used to have a photo of the latest roving ( that was four years ago, before I started breaking all my bones) All the little things I knitted in the past have always gone to some baby or child. Bless you heart for wanting to start with a drop spindle ( it's called a drop spindle for a reason) Did you know you can make your own? From some old CDs and a stick? Let me see if I can dig that up.

@Spinliesel My apologies for the delay in replying. I was ill for a bit.

I'm sorry about your bones. 😟

What color was the roving? I've seen different podcasters on YouTube with some amazing things.

I'm all about the DIY. salivating

I'm currently racing against the clock to make my cousin in gestation a blanket before she's born but I love DIY projects. They've kept me sane over the years.

I'm mainly wanting a drop spindle because, once I save up for the sewing machine I want, there's no way a spinning wheel is getting into my room.

Is there anything I can offer you in return? I tend to collect a lot of information when I research things. Especially crafting related subjects.
