I came across a reference to this child's knitted sock a couple of days ago. it dates from around 300 CE and is the earliest colored knitted item found. It is dyed with plants and earths. it looks to me as if it is knitted in stocking stitch, but knitting into the backs of the stitches to give that slight twist. I thought it wasrather nice that even then people wanted to make their socks a bit more interesting! The single sock was found in an ancient rubbish heap so it looks as if the single sock problem was already around.

The colors are so vibrant as well...the shape is more of a slipper with that wide heel...
ha ha One sock syndrome...it still prevails after all these years!
