Scrappy Weekend

Since I am downsizing, I am trying to use up supplies and fabrics that I have on hand when I feel like making something. I have boxes of scraps from the many quilts I make each year, so I try to make a few projects every month to use some of it up...lol...it might take me the rest of my life...

Anyway, two of the women in my office were admiring the mug rug that I use in my office to set my coffee cup and snack plate on. I decided to make them one of their own.

The first on was inspired by the little bird scrap I found. The lining and edging are made from hand dyed fabric I had from when I did a workshop in Canada on shibori dyeing. Just so happened to have a mug that seems to match it perfectly. That will go to her as well.

The second one is for a woman who loves the color purple. She is also a gardener. I found a scrap of bee fabric and used that as a starting point.

Hope these ladies enjoy their coffee and snacks using their new little mats!

EDITED: I gave them to the women and they love them!

That is a lovely idea and a good way to use spare scraps. You are giving me ideas to add to my to-do list! I have a large stash of material for both patchwork and knitting that I want to use up and projects are not always easy to think of. I like the themed approach too.

Thanks!

It is easy to also do a color approach...I took some sandwich bags and filled them with scraps that went together...my living room floor looked like an explosion of fabric scraps! ha ha

Now, when I have some free time, I just grab a bag and go...

I also used what I call my "cheater method" of doing a bias binding...no hand sewing required!

I wrote up a list of projects to use up my scraps, but my favorite are these little mini and practical quilts and glass coasters...they make nice gifts...

Yarn...ugh...yes, hard to find uses for the small leftovers, but I am using those up as well...I will post a in progress picture of what I am doing with those...

@thinktwice I have got a lot of really small but nice pieces and these little mats would be an ideal way to use them up. I'll try one and put up a picture. I am hand quilting a big quilt and trying to finish a fine wool and silk lace shawl at the moment so a small alternative project will be very welcome.

@CeliaVL I was going to ask how your shawl was going! I usually have to take a break from big projects, too...just to feel like I got something done! lol

@thinktwice It's going well but I am only doing a couple of rows at a time, partly to give my hands a break and partly because it is quite warm here now and my hands get too sticky. I might not finish it until I get to England for my holidays It will be a lot cooler there.
