@Tejas Wow, that comment also says a lot about you. How exactly? I'll get to that. But first this: I'm a veteran science educator; the label "science denier" certainly won't stick. Yet I feel my existence has meaning. Maybe not on a cosmological scale, but in the context of a human life on Earth, yes. That feeling is made manifest when I run into a former student, and they say something like, "you really opened my eyes," or "damned if you weren't right about XYZ." I was part of the cohort of teachers that finally drove home the reality of climate change. My former students are now advocating and voting for the transition to green energy. It's a big deal in human history, and I played a small role in it. And any time I can help someone with a problem, I add a grain of sand to the positive side of the balance. Even if it's just picking a plastic bag out of the bay. I don't look for meaning to come from outside. We make (or discover) our own meaning. If meaning eludes you, well, that's a sad state to be in. It probably explains your nihilism. If you don't want to go on being a sad mofo, try helping others.

@Tejas Obviously I was talking about functional weapons with ammunition. Duh. Yes, some individual collectors can qualify for special waivers or permits to possess otherwise prohibited weapons. This has little to do with mass marketing to the general public. The 2nd Amendment stipulates a "WELL REGULATED Militia..." In other words, regulations (limitations) around possession/ownership are built into our laws from the constitutional level on up. Note that the founding fathers realized the necessity to regulate the possession of arms even when a rifle or musket was only capable of being fired accurately twice in a minute, and the muzzle velocity was only 1200 fps. Now the semi-automatic rifle can be fired 120+ times per minute, and the muzzle velocity is 3,000 feet per second. More firepower necessitates more regulation. Obviously. Virtually everyone agrees that people who are mentally unstable, or have been convicted of a serious crime, should not have firearms. The question is, how shall we implement that? Age limits, background checks, red flag laws, laws against ghost guns, all have wide support. Anyone who argues against closing the gun show loophole is not a serious interlocutor.

@Tejas I have never argued for repeal of the 2nd Amendment. In fact, I've been a gun owner my whole adult life. At the same time, I don't think the 2nd Amendment guarantees civilians the right to keep modern, military-style weapons (like the AR-15). Obviously there has to be a limit to what is allowed. Stinger missiles are out. Rocket propelled grenades are out. Heavy machine guns, out. Light machine guns, out. Why are all of these obviously out? Because of their killing potential. And I argue that the AR-15, because of its high-powered cartridges, its potential for rapid fire even as a semi-automatic, its high magazine capacities, and the ease with which an empty magazine can be replaced by a fully loaded one, definitely makes it a full-on military weapon and not appropriate for civilian use.

The evolution of the eye is well understood. So your Darwin quote meme is once again a stupid sandwich.
Flyingsaucesir replies on Sep 28, 2023:
Right you are, @Druvius! In fact, eyes have evolved independently many times in many different lineages. In the lineage that led to mammals, it probably went something like this: A simple flat patch of light-sensitive cells is better, more useful in survival and procreation than absence of such a patch. Any individuals having such an advantage were more likely to survive and reproduce than those who did not have it. And making the patch even slightly bowl-shaped is an improvement, allowing not only sensation of light but also the approximate direction from which the light in emanating. Further curvature increases the rudimentary eye's effectiveness at determining the source of the light (or an object casting a shadow by passing in front of it). Reducing the aperture to a pinhole can provide a clear but dim image; a rough blob of clear protein in a larger aperture can let in lots of light and also act as a lense. Smoothing of the lense over generations increases the visual acuity of descendants over that of their ancestors. Each successive adaptation gave individuals who possessed it an advantage for survival and reproduction over their contemporaries who lacked it. Isn't it amazing how, in time, natural selection acting on the natural variation in populations can produce such wonderfully useful structures? 😍

@Tejas You're still just dodging his question. Please stop quibbling, and for heavens sake quit patting yourself on the back over your gun knowledge. If you want to impress people with your intellect, learn everything there is to know about, for instance, a field of science (like biology or physics), or be fluent in half a dozen languages. Then you will get the attention you crave. Until then, you're just another idiotic, developmentally-arrested, gun nut. Now, back to @Sgt_spanky's question. The AR-15 is a military assault rifle that doesn't go fully automatic unless it is modified after market. It has a receiver that accepts banana clip, high capacity magazines that are easily changed out when emptied. It shoots a .223 in. or 7.65 mm bullet with a muzzle velocity in the neighborhood of 2500 to 3000 feet per second. If its chambered for a .22 caliber round we call it "AR-style" and note the different caliber. The .223 or 7.65 does horrendous damage to a human body. The weapon is designed specifically for killing people in great numbers. Why does any civilian have to have such a weapon? Why isn't a 9 mm pistol or the like sufficient fire power for home protection/self defense?

Flyingsaucesir replies on Sep 25, 2023:
@1patriot Maybe we have different notions of the meaning of the word "settled." What I mean by it is that, in the context of biology, the idea that all species evolve by natural selection acting on the natural variation in populations is universally accepted. (By universally, I mean 99.9% of biologists agree that Darwin was correct. In any large group you will inevitably find an oddball 0.1% who have sold out to corporate interests or to religious ideology.) However, this high acceptance does not imply that there is not always more to learn. In fact, new discoveries usually prompt more questions, and science does not rest on its laurels. In that sense, nothing is ever settled. There is always more to know, and scientists will keep on digging, never reaching an end.
A new normal?

@1patriot How can a theory be settled? I usually charge $75/hour for tutoring, but for you, today, I will make an exception. Let's start at the beginning. A conjecture is basically a guess about the nature of something that is unknown or not well understood. There may not be any good way to test a conjecture. A hypothesis is an educated guess, one that can be tested. After rigorous and repeated testing, if the results consistently indicate that the hypothesis is correct, then what we learned from the process may be called a fact. A theory is an explanation that unifies and makes sense of a set of facts that otherwise may appear unrelated. This unifying explanation opens up entirely new avenues of inquiry. One of the hallmarks of a correct theory is that it allows us to successfully predict future discoveries. Example: It is a fact that the east coasts of the Americas look as if they fit, like jigsaw puzzle pieces, with the west coasts of Africa and Europe. It is a fact that the Pacific Ocean is ringed by volcanoes. It is a fact that all the world's oceans have mid-ocean volcanic ridges. It is a fact that ocean bottom rocks are youngest at the ridges and are progressively older the farther away they are from the mid-ocean ridge. It is a fact that ocean bottom rocks plunge underneath continental rocks along steep fault planes. It is a fact that the strongest earthquakes ever recorded occur along the faults between oceanic and continental rocks. It is a fact that a major fault runs through California, and the motion along it is right-lateral strike-slip (not at all like the fault that plunges under the west coast of South America). At first glance, it may appear that these facts are unrelated. In fact, they ARE related. And their relationships to each other is explained by a theory: the theory of plate tectonics. This theory says that the Earth's crust is divided into distinct plates that constantly move around and jostle each other. The movement of the plates is driven by convection currents in the mantle, which are in turn driven by heat generated through the decay of radioactive elements in the rocks. Formulation of this theory opened up the field of geology, allowing a cascade of successful predictions about faults, volcanoes, stratigraphy, geophysical properties of rocks, etc., etc. Review: A theory is not to be confused with a conjecture or hypothesis. A conjecture is a guess. A hypothesis is an educated guess that can be tested. A hypothesis that has been tested and found to be correct can be called a fact. A theory is an explanation that unifies and makes sense of a disparate set of facts. Conclusion: Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is such a theory. It has proven to be so successful, that it ...

@1patriot You appear to fundamentally misunderstand science. Science makes conclusive judgements about nature all the time; has done so for centuries. Take, for instance, the scientific conclusions, after the work of luminaries like Copernicus, Keppler, and Galileo, that the Earth is a sphere, that it orbits the sun, and that the orbit is elliptical. Once very much in doubt, these are now accepted, settled, conclusive scientific facts. Or take Charles Darwin's proposition that all species evolve through natural selection acting on the natural variations in every population: a fact that is, among biologists, settled science. Evolutionary change has already been measured in real time in hundreds of species. The evidence is overwhelming. Likewise Einstein's theory of relativity. It has been confirmed over and over, in a variety of different ways. So yes, there is such a thing as conclusive science. Does that mean there is no more to learn? No! We keep building on previous conclusions. That is how it works.

It's a lot like the fossil fuel industry claiming that global warming isn't real, or isn't caused by burning fossil fuels: a few people are, if not convinced by the lies, at least paralyzed by doubt. But on this site, most people are free thinkers, with good critical thinking skills. They know bullshit when they see it, hear it, smell it. And @FrayedBear reeks of (sh)it. @1patriot, @Ryo1 Actually, the science is conclusive. It's only OUTSIDE of science that we find any controversy over whether global warming is real or not. It's getting more and more difficult to deny that the problem is real. In fact, impossible, except in the cases of a few wackjobs whose opinions don't matter anyway (e.g. @1patriot).
