Years of speculation, fiction (movies, stories), and non (uncovering bodies in the Scandinavian peninsula, and northern Canada), concerning the exposing of diseases long buried. The 1918 flu is clearly a candidate of possible revival. Could it have survived the freezing? "Fortitude," although stupidly horror like, does explore the possibility of insects that might have been using a mammoth carcass as food just before total cold immersion.

The tundra is melting. The glaciers are melting. What "evil" may be coming our way?

Yes, this is on my mind. There are various possible developments, some of them not quite as "end of world" as others, but noting -

  • there was the incident recently of the seed bank built in the arctic experiencing some issues

  • One angle here that I do want to raise is that, in the end, I think it may be a bit more do-able than some think to restore atmospheric CO2 to under 400 ppm or even lower around the world. I'm not sure that addresses the CH4 that will be released during any melt, but to make the basic point, there are some efforts underway to research whether there can be some sort of active cleanup of the ecosystem that we have polluted. While it may be a longshot, perhaps it's not really fully hopeless.... perhaps both technological innovation and change in human behavior could result in reducing the temperature where it needs to be and re-freezing much of the ice before it's fully melted. (However, as I write this out, I have to admit that the timeline doesn't work.... the arctic and greenland seem to be going through too much melt to hope that some of these scary scenarios can be avoided).

Some of the "cleanup" proposed technologies can be seen at these links:

But should we even try? Maybe spend our time and money, instead, on moving and learning about our new climates.

There will be many dying. Sad, but true.

It's a legit question, but for what it's worth, for now, my view is I think the answer is yes we should try.

Unfortunately, if any, we won't know until it is to late for some.

Antarctica may not be our friend.

@Jacar I've read several "end of the world" stories that bring that exact concern up.

And there is always "War of the Worlds" for the opposite effect.

@RavenCT "End of the world" is an extremely remote possibility. Humans are here to stay for many thousands of years. But, a new dark age is coming. Hope i will not live to be completely immersed in it.
