The only problem with 'treasure hunters' is too often the find is separated from its original context which can help with dating, position of the pieces in relation to each other, location in relation to other finds or early villages, etc.

Still, having good treasure trove laws means they are motivated to report finds right away. Better than having them motivated to simply loot. And they have found incredible things that archeologists would never have found. A retired postmaster spent years going over every inch of the Towton Battlefield for example, and carefully recorded the GPS location of every find. Invaluable data.
