My favorite TED Talk! Nat Geo Explorer and Harvard Ethnobotanist Wade Davis: Dreams From Endangered Cultures.

Yes, our rapidly vanishing Biosphere is a catastrophe. But our cultural ETHNOSPHERE is vanishing at a much faster rate: We lose a human language every two weeks and much more than half of all languages have gone extinct since 1960! Since each language is a separate way of seeing the world, HUMANKIND IS RAPIDLY BECOMING MYOPIC.

Great insight from Wade Davis. I was so entranced by his Massey Lecture on the Wayfinders that I bought his book. [cbc.ca]

My guess is that cultural evolution is not always a good thing. Quite likely, genetic evolution has also had its backward and forward steps on the way to who we are today. I think we are placing all cultural value on utility and dismissing all the less tangible cultural values such as spirituality, metaphor, intuition and whatever else relates us to connection with the world around us. We call a lot of this connection to the intangible world art. Whatever we call this side of our lives, we better fight for it because as consumers living in a capitalist world, we are making ourselves nothing more than utilities too,
