We need a group for Aspergers only, No family or others, just those with Aspergers. Many of us have been badly treated by family and friends.
Have you tried wrongplanet.com? I used to spend alot of time there. It got to be too much after awhile because I would dwell on my issues too much but it was definately helpful and relatable.
Also I just discovered this Facebook group, seems like mostly adults talking about themselves. I haven't interacted there much but have seen some good conversations going on and it looks like a good group. [facebook.com]
As a support worker, I'd love to sit in and read how this goes, but importantly I understand that it should be closed. That way any interfering do-gooders like myself are out of the picture.
Go for it.
Ask for help from the admins to set it up and how to police it.
I'm a parent, but my son has never been treated badly by any family. I am sorry your family is not supportive. That has to be frustrating and hurtful. I wish people would educate themselves when there is a family member on the spectrum.
I think a group for Autistics Only is a good idea, but I would advise that you don't use "aspergers" as this might limit others on the spectrum (and also it's no longer a medical term used, so there are new people being diagnosed who might not seek out the group) and keep them from finding the group.
I think your idea is really good though. It could be a way for autists to meet and find each other and that is something that my son could use.
Asperger's is a term used for a specific group of people on the autism spectrum. It is no longer officially diagnosed in the USA but many healthcare professionals use the term.
It remains in the International Classification of Diseases as a subtype of autism spectrum disorder.
Many people use it to identify themselves and their traits and take pride in this.
@MsAl Yes, but my concern is that not all on the spectrum who might fall into the category would use the word to seek out a group. And I think the term discounts some of the difficulties that people on the spectrum encounter. I hope it does become a group though for those on the spectrum who need to find camaraderie.
Actually, we need our own secret society, so we can plot taking over the planet!
Agreed!
Very sorry to hear about that. Definitely form your own group. My Autistic Daughter is my favorite person in the world. So very sad thinking of family being assholes, but I can see it...
The best I can suggest is form your own group, that way the parameters can be exactly as you want
How do I form my own group?

Posted by altschmerzI was diagnosed with autism by a psychologist after a day of testing, but my current therapist keeps saying she doesn't think I have it (or I'm a "little bit" autistic).
