Anthony Bourdain, a Montréal connection
When he visited Montreal for the first time in 2004 for the release of his Les Halles Cookbook, more than 300 young cooks stood in line holding copies of his books as well as chef’s knives, chef’s jackets, aprons, the works. “Nothing makes me happier than seeing chefs show up with old stained copies of Kitchen Confidential that have been passed around the kitchen,” he said that day. “Within a few months of the book’s release, I’d get calls at the restaurant from some drunken chef from the middle of nowhere saying, ‘Dude, you lived my life’.”
Soon after, Bourdain moved to TV, first on the Food Network with the program A Cook’s Tour and later on CNN, where he hosted programs like No Reservations, The Layover and his latest, Parts Unknown. Each series featured a show on Montreal, where he declared his love for the city and its chefs, most especially Au Pied de Cochon’s Martin Picard and Joe Beef’s Fred Morin and David McMillan. Morin and McMillan joined Bourdain in a recent program dedicated to Newfoundland. If anyone boosted Quebec’s culinary scene, it would be Bourdain, who even filmed a show at Montreal’s ITHQ after learning the cooking school was government-subsidized.

My home city of Toronto has better variety in cultural food but it doesn't compare to Montreal in the calibre of the food in my estimation. I watched Anthony like a food zealot would, his passing is a loss for everyone who loves food and adventure.
