General Motors is shuttering its plant in Oshawa as part of a restructuring of its global operations to autonomous and zero-emission vehicles, sources say.
Two sources, who were briefed on General Motors’ plan, said the Oshawa plant will be completely closed down. Those sources said Canada isn’t the only country affected by the auto giant’s move to shift its investment to autonomous and zero-emission vehicles.
The offices of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford were informed of the decision late Sunday before the official announcement on Monday. A federal official later told The Globe and Mail that the government will be examining the impact of the closure and what measures it might take to help laid off auto workers.
GM employees have been told to expect an announcement at 10 a.m. on Monday morning, but have not been given details.

If you are speaking of the last big bail out for the auto sector, All of the money loaned to the automakers by the government of Canada was repaid
Isn’t GM and Ford both in some financial trouble? They are both looking to lay-off thousands in America after trying to force early retirements.

Elon Musk stated that Ford will not exist very soon. Yes, he is a competitor, but does he have information that most of us are not privy to?
@Science-guy I have a hard time believing this. When Chrysler and GM went bankrupt, Ford didn't. They did originally ask for money, but then ended up selling other companies to avoid chapter 11. I was paying very close attention to the big 3 at that time because I worked for one.

To what and by whom? Auto plants are huge, energy intense operations. They don't lend themselves easily to repurposing.
