Bio

If you recognize the name, you probably know it because of the Apathetic Agnostic Church (ApatheticAgnostic dot com) which, nearly 25 years later, is still the largest website devoted to agnosticism - or at least my particular take on agnosticism.

On the profile questions, I've left myself open to dating - but I'm primarily here for community and participation in discussions. I'm highly unlikely to initiate a relationship here with anyone, but I'm not closed to offers although I don't expect any. smile009.gif

Well Joel, since you ask... As this site works primarily as a discussion site - which can lead to romantic entanglement - the way to tell people about who you really are is to participate. Post and comment. Show you have a serious side. Show you have a humorous side. Show you are thoughtful. Let people get to know you that way - and there's a fair chance someone will want to know you better.

I tend to research quotes to determine if they are correctly attributed - and the quotation in the meme was published in the NYT in 1972, referencing a 1950 letter by Einstein as the source. However I also found this.... *The New Quotable Einstein by Alice Calaprice (Princeton University Press, 2005: ISBN 0691120749), p. 206, has a different and presumably more accurate version of this letter, which she dates to February 12, 1950 and describes as "a letter to a distraught father who had lost his young son and had asked Einstein for some comforting words": * *A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. The striving to free oneself from this delusion is the one issue of true religion. Not to nourish it but to try to overcome it is the way to reach the attainable measure of peace of mind.* Worded a bit differently - and better I think.

We generally make a mistake when when we ask if something is in accordance with Christianity. We should remember Christianity is made up of a myriad of denominations, sects, cults, individual churches, etc. It is thousands of different sets of teachings each claiming to have an exclusive grasp of The Truth. Whether it is a sin to seek professional help, or a sin not to do so, or something of no moral consequence at all depends on which sliver of Christianity you are talking about.

John_Tyrrell comments on Nov 26, 2018:
Check the vintage ;-) so you know what's in it. *The stevia that has been used to sweeten the lemon-lime soft drink is now being switched out for high fructose corn syrup, Consumerist reports. This move has elicited big reactions from consumers, many of whom are saying that they will no longer buy the beverage. * *PepsiCo originally removed high fructose corn syrup from Sierra Mist in 2010 and replaced it with cane sugar. That allowed the company to market the drink as “natural,” distinguishing it from other soft drinks on the market that are sweetened with corn syrup or artificial sweeteners and gaining the loyalty of customers who perceived it as a healthy alternative. It then modified the recipe to include stevia instead of cane sugar, but since stevia comes from a plant it was able to keep its “natural” label. * *Now Sierra Mist is being rebranded as Mist TWST and will be sweetened with high fructose corn syrup again. This is an interesting decision, considering consumers are more concerned about what goes into their bodies today than they were six years ago.*

I assume you are talking about fire prevention. One of the reasons, other than climate change, for worsening forest fires is that for years we have been preventing fires and thereby preventing the natural regeneration and revitalization of woodlands, while making the forests actually more susceptible to major uncontrollable fires. It's becoming apparent that we would do better to leave things alone and let nature take its course. Also regardless of the fire issue, by raking the forest, we would be removing necessary nutrients from the forest floor as well as destroying the habitat for small animals.

John_Tyrrell comments on Nov 24, 2018:
A basic universal income is not necessarily a "socialist" concept. Consider that the economist Milton Friedman - certainly not a socialist, rather someone pilloried as a bogey man by many socialists - proposed this back in 1962. Essentially he suggested this be accomplished through the tax system - a negative income tax whereby anyone below a certain income level would receive a tax "refund" sufficient to live on. [Edit] - Actually, Friedman started working on the concept of a basic income as far back as 1939, though he did not flesh out a negative income tax as the implementation mechanism until '62.
