I'm not sure if Walt Whitman was atheist...but it sure is obvious he was agnostic!

"Whitman was a religious skeptic: though he accepted all churches, he believed in none. God, to Whitman, was both immanent and transcendent and the human soul was immortal and in a state of progressive development"

He was considered a religious skeptic. From his commentaries and poetry, he appears to have been some form of deist. Mostly anti war, he supported the Union in the Civil War as a good cause and worked as a semi-nurse. He often would help wounded soldiers write to their loved ones.
