As a non-binary transgender woman, I've been thinking about wether or not to update my identity documents. I had my name legally changed four years ago but never had the gender marker changed on my birth certificate. In Pa I was able to get it changed on my drivers license, but when I moved to Hawaii last year and got a Hi license the DMV went with what's on my birth certificate which is male. Since I don't feel completely female or completely male I'm thinking of keeping things the way they are, a feminine name and male gender marker. A part of me feels like by doing so I'm not being " trans enough " but if I'm comfortable with it should that matter?
I've avoided changing my name or any of my gender markers on the offchance that I ever have to travel somewhere where being any kind of gender variant is illegal. I wouldn't do it out of choice, but it's possible work could want to send me somewhere where LGBTphobia is enshrined in Sharia or Colonial British law. Even having the gender marker removed from my passport might ring alarm bells in those situations.
"Not being/feeling trans enough" seems to be a curse of what we do. Like it or not, some people see an established trans hierarchy of early transition post-op beats late transition post-op beats pre-op beats non-op beats TV beats CD. Non-binary being something new, I think it fits in there somewhere between non-op and TV. Like the COGIATI test, the whole thing's nonsense, of course. It shouldn't be a competition, it should be about finding your own place.
As others have said 'do what makes you happy.' But think long and hard if 'trying to be more trans' is one of your primary motivations. You have nothing to prove, least of all to yourself.
You do you, Sugar. Do you know if there are any ramifications to having various ID with different genders on it? Would it ever be a problem down the line?
I have my legal name on everything and the gender marker on everything says male so it shouldn't be a problem other than I do have a feminine name ( which I love ).
Do what's comfortable for you that's all that matters
