Conversely Clement Vallandigham former Union senator, who defected to the south was renowned as a defense attorney who never lost a case. He died proving his client innocent. His defense was that the alleged victim had actually committed suicide. In demonstrating how this could have happened in open court, Vallandigham drew his own gun from his jacket instead of the murder weapon and shot himself dead, thus proving his case and securing an acquittal for his client.

Fame seeking actress Lupe Vélez often claimed she want to be remembered forever, but most of her films were flops. She however attained world wide everlasting fame for the oft repeated tale of her death, a botched suicide attempt, that resulted in the marble seat of her toilet knocking her unconscious when it fell on her while she was vomiting up her overdose, and resulting in her being found next morning drowned in her own lavatory bowl
