Do science documentaries overstate what is understood? I watched a show last night called "The History of the World in 2 Hours." A lot of what was stated was stated in a way, that lead me to believe we have justification for knowing this is true. Then I wondered, is there justification for this or is this just the best guess without supporting evidence? Are they selling me entertainment or am I being educated? If we know something, I want to know how we know it. Or if it's something that is above my capability to understand, then I'm willing to accept that if they tell me there is evidence to support this.
Hard to say anything in general because it very much depends on the actual documentary. Personally I am just appalled by the low quality of "documentaries" that one can view on the US "Discovery" or "History" channels. Some of those are not documentaries at all but spreading attempts to use myths, misinformation and silly beliefs to increase viewer attention.
