I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and am some what of an imbecile when it comes to biology. What do others think of it?

I once heard a microbiologist say that we are essentially bacteria colonies attached to a human body.
Also, that if an alien intelligence discovered earth they might refer to it as the bacteria planet.

I took an online course with Coursera from Rob Knight on the human gut microbiome when he was at the University of Colorado. My undergraduate degree is in biochemistry, which included micobiology so I had a good background. It was very interesting.

I'm not a biologist either, so much of it is beyond me. But it makes me wonder if other advanced species (primates, other mammals) also have a high proportion of microbial DNA, and whether they (and we) could even have evolved without it.
