I'm heading out to Joshua Tree National Park on Friday, August 10th, with my son (13 yrs old) to hike, bike, and at night... watch the Perseid meteor shower and look through my new telescope (Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will all be visible)! If you live in the area and want to meet up for the stargazing message me and I'll send directions of where we will set up (on a dirt road, but you don't need 4x4 to drive it). I usually do an "open invite" on facebook to my friends and a few show up, and I'd love it if any other fellow heathens on here show up, too!

Alas, I'm too far north, but an acquaintance has a sweet set up out there ... check out his awesome astrophotography! @gibsonpics

the desert ecosystem is very fragile. please stop operating a vehicle in it.

I only drive, bike or hike on official, established roads/trails.

I'd love to come over, but I have a date with a lady that Friday to go to a planetarium show. First things first ya know. please let me know whenever you go again. I would love to get under those dark skies.

Is that where our oldest trees are?

No... that's in central California near Mono lake... there are excellent dark skies out there! Jtree is good too but Mono is better!

Posted by starwatcher-alI missed the early phases of the eclipse but the clouds mostly left during totality. All in all a great eclipse. Next one is Nov. 8-22
