I watched an Ad put out by the South Australian Water Supplier Company last evening, it stated that usage of ANYTHING other than toilet paper clogs up the Sewage mains.
To quote their words, " Toilet Paper IS designed to start breaking down in water AFTER 3 minutes of insertion into water."
As a nosy, inquiring Amateur, Backyard Scientist I decided to TEST for myself their statement.
I took 2 squares of Dunny Paper, immersed them in to water from the toilet cistern, left them to soak and checked them at regular 3 minute intervals, GUESS what, they did NOT begin to 'breakdown' until after 3 and a half hours had passed and then only slightly, the toilet paper is STILL soaking and has hardly broken down at all.
I also tested ordinary paper hand-towels, wet wipes, pocket tissues and tissues from a box of tissues as well as squares of ordinary Newspaper, GUESS what, the tissues, paper towels and newspaper squares ALL broke down nicely after 4 and a half hours into a very thin, floating film of paper fibres.
And before anyone jumps in, YES, I also agitated each and every sample in a manner to simulate it traveling through the sewers, so, S.A. Water, your statement IS wrong.

I often set about testing for myself what Authorities state just to see IF they are right or merely barking up the wrong tree.
One I did as a teenager that got a few stern looks from my Dad was to check and see if an ordinary person with a shortwave radio receiver and a piece of wire could tap into the phone line.
It worked, no cut the insulation, no soldering, etc, just wound the wire around the phone line to the house, connected to the radio antenna, instant phone tapping.
