When recently I needed to don my garden hat I was quite out of luck: 7 microbats had snuggled in for the day, which became a 5-day visit, at which point they probably had caught up with their mob.

Wow. Totally bizarre.
Be very careful around bats. They are a major carrier of rabies. Do you know about rabies? Rabies is horrible, and very nearly 100% fatal if not treated within a very specific window after exposure - I.e. before symptoms develop. Only 6 people are known to have ever survived rabies if not treated before symptoms develop. Look up the Milwaukee Protocol for more details. You very definitely do not want rabies.

rabies is well known to me from my childhood in germany, where mainly foxes were afflicted with the disease. so i am very respectful with wild animals of all kinds, & would never have tried to touch the bats. ...& i put the hat out into the sun after the bats had moved out.

@walklightly Good job! I would not want you to get exposed to that. Would be Nightmarish.

@MrLink, frothing from the mouth? how inelegant!

@walklightly the disease prevents you from swallowing

How cute! Amazing little creatures, to be sure.

yes, & usually quite elusive.

@walklightly I'm a big fan of bats, they eat the monster mosquitos here.

yes, i thought so too... & did check every morning whether they'd come back. they just glimpsed at me, but didn't much seem to mind my nosiness 🙂
