I hope this post doesn't cause any upset--just sharing because I found it interesting. This is a young, female, domestic Muscovy duck with a badly broken left leg. Her owners (who have had her since she was a duckling) found her in their yard, unable to walk but no known trauma. She's a very sweet bird and her owners are quite attached to her, so they've opted for surgery. Here are some photos of her sedation with isofluorane gas and her VD x-ray. A leg pinning is scheduled for Monday morning.

gosh! what a sweet bird - she's even still laying eggs in that condition, so yeah, there can't be much of a trauma present. i wish her all the best of luck for a swift recovery. ... & you are legend!

Oh for shit's sake. Are you kidding me? I suppose it's the decent thing to do. What's the medical bill on something like that? (Also, did that duck lay an egg in its cage?)

@Insectra Wow it recently cost me $1250 to have three wobbly little front teeth removed from my old cat's lower jaw and I still don't think that it has solved the problem.
@Insectra This is a high priced surgery owned by local "gentry" probably employing too many staff and certainly not wanting my business - I think they were shit scared they would kill her- they claimed never to have seen such an old cat and in fact when she was returned to me she was unable to use her hind legs for about a further three hours because of the anaesthetic and her eyes continued to be dilated for more than six hours.
Very interesting post. Glad she's getting help,poor thing.

This is cool. I'm supportive! As a teenager, my family had a lame duck as well. It survived but had to walk lopsided dragging one foot. That was way back in '73 so my dad named it "Nixon" after the lame duck then president.

Lol. At Siesta Beach we have numerous gulls and terns missing entire sections of their legs. They seem to get along fine but I always feel bad for them.

@Insectra For awhile I had a goal of getting a marmot photo on the summit of every Colorado 14,000 mountain. I got about 5 of them but have been limited in my climbing and travel the last few years. Still, I like Marmot pictures. They are real funny up high. They hang out around humans because they know we have food. They are also very bold. I had to chase one away from my campsite when I was boiling spaghetti. I literally had to chase the thing with a hiking pole!
