so, shaping things up with a spoke shave..

so drew a line and sawed the bottom side. sawed then the sides of bowl's underside (very crudely). Next I'll work some of the rougher spots and edges on a little belt sander before refining the shape further with a spoke shave.

You should do a sped up time-lapse video showing from beginning to finish. I bet a lot of people would be interested to see that, including me!

Anxious to see the outcome. I've never carved a spoon. I have the tools to do it, just never tried.

I'm sure you could manage it wonderfully.

After everything else you have done, I think a spoon wouldn't be any trouble. You could even make tiny spoons

did you start them from seed?

btroje Level 9 June 18, 2018

What will you use for the finish?

pixiedust Level 8 June 18, 2018

mineral oil.

@hankster Nice. I bet that really brings out the grain.

@pixiedust and helps keep the moisture out, preventing splitting. is food safe, and because it's inorganic it won't spoil inside the wood ruining the utensil

So, the "bowl" is carved out. it'll get some sanding later with the rest of the spoon. next is to shape the bottom side.
