I don't know if we can count Hayao Miyazaki films in the mix, but I am a huge fan of:
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Howl's Moving Castle (love, love this one)
And then there's:
Death Note (the Japanese version)

Old School for me. Project A-Ko, Appleseed, Akira. I just recently re-wached Space Battleship Yamato. (the first anime I saw when I was a wee lad, on UHF after-school TV and it was called Star Blazers)

Wow I totally forgot it was called Star Blazers in North America. I watched it a a little kid also my first anime. Later I found a dubbed vhs copy of Battleship Yamato and just assumed it was same show. I just watched the opening song of Star Blazers on Google and was taken way back lol.
Star Battleship Yamato, Akira, Macros, Robotech, arise, Ghost in the Shell, Gundam Wing, Speed Racer, astroboy, Coyboy Bebop, is a good start for me.

Somebody likes science fiction.
If you like Astroboy then you might like Giant Robo (the movie). The animation quality harkens back to Astroboy, plus the story is good to.
I like Death Note but everyone gives me shit for liking it! Lol
