So I don't so much go on hikes as I do drive out to the desert and wander about looking for rocks. It gets interesting walking a few miles into a canyon with a pick, shovel, and various hammers and chisels only to have to bring all that stuff back out with the addition of 50 pounds of rock. Anyhow, after getting the rocks home, I cut the into slabs on a saw, and use various grinding wheels to cut them into cabochons. Here's a pair I cut from Jasper collected at Lavic Siding, California.

Unfinished Rhodonite from Crafton Hills. In the interest of honesty, this material is no longer available to collect. It was a very small deposit and was accidentally destroyed by an inexperienced miner back in the 60s.

Jasper from an undisclosed location. It's undisclosed because I there's not much of it out there and I'd like to get more some day.

I wanted more photos, but I've apparently only got the one on my phone. I'll pull some from my Facebook and post them when I get a chance.

Posted by CallMeDaveI've never been a big wildflower person, but this is the season for it here in Appalachia. Other people can identify every variety. I'm not there yet.
